Stephen Barker is Director of Communications and Marketing at Nottingham City Council
Isn't the thing about conferences that they never really get going until mid-afternoon on day one and then by the time you've got going on day two it's time to think about getting back to the office? Er ... No.
Not at the LGcomms Academy anyway.
The Academy gets underway even before it starts each day, including on day one, Wednesday, with informal breakfast sessions. I'm running that first one and it's got a social media focus.
We all put a lot of effort into trying to make social media work for us, personally as much as in the interests of our employer. And we all need to be confident that we're getting as much payback as possible for all the effort we put in.
I'm no social media expert myself (Are you? Is anyone?) but I think I'm getting some of the basics right and that I'm avoiding some of the more obvious mistakes that I see a lot of other people, and organisations, making on a daily basis.
I'm not promising that Wednesday's Social Media Breakfast Session will be any kind of master class, I'm hoping it can be something of a masterconversation. Maybe there is a trick or two I could share with you. I hope there is a trick or two that you will share with me.
Whether you think of yourself as a social media thought leader, or if you don't know your Clay Sharkeys from your clay pigeons, I do hope that you will get the Academy of to an early and flying start by 'following' your 'friends' to 'join' me for a 'share'. You might 'like' it. Or whatever.
