Future Leaders programme 2018/19

CommsCamp Birmingham - 12th July 2018

CommsCamp is an unconference for in-house public-sector people. It is the largest such event in Europe. You are encouraged to possibly pitch a session and contribute to discussions.

Best Practice Days - London, 4th and 5th September 2018. Mandatory

4 September

Day 1 at Cabinet Office learning from the best in central government led by Executive Director of Government Communications Alex Aitken. Times tbc but likely to be early start so accommodation the night before is advisable.

Evening: Dinner hosted by Lgcomms, LGA and Cabinet Office at LGA buildings in Smith Square in London. Drinks on roof terrace between the end of the day and dinner, with the option for people to go back to their hotels and freshen up if they need to.

Unless you are very local, it is advisable that you stay overnight.

5 September

Day 2 with Simon Jones, chair of Lgcomms, David Holdstock, director of communications at LGA and other industry experts providing insight on leadership and challenges for heads of communications. Held at Smith Square at LGA’s offices. Times tbc. For travel purposes, the day should conclude by 5.30pm at the latest.

London hotel options are provided below. Full agendas will be provided shortly.

Public Sector Communications Academy - Birmingham, 9th & 10th October 2018. Attendance is mandatory for one day.

You will be required to attend at least one day of Academy as part of the programme. Recommendations will be made for which programme elements to attend. An additional Future Leader session will be available at Academy which will be advised in advance. ALL Future Leaders taking part will get a discounted place and will only need to pay £100 for FULL Academy. Please can all Future Leaders confirm back to Vin which days you will be attending so we can arrange the special session according to availability.

One Black Bear Digital and Marketing Agency - Birmingham, January TBC

Visit to One Black Bear digital and marketing agency to see first-hand the approach adopted by a large agency.

Sheffield City Council good practice day - Date TBC

An opportunity to see how communications and marketing is shaped, developed and delivered in the 4th largest council in the country.

Leadership University Course - Leeds, 6th & 7th February 2019. Mandatory.

This will be a two-day course hosted by Professor Paul Willis and will include a group dinner. You will be required to stay overnight unless you live locally.

Hotel details will be provided nearer the time.

Final 'Graduation' day - Location and date will depend on Future Leaders who will shape where this takes place.

This will be a full day with a graduation dinner afterwards. There will be an optional overnight stay depending on location.

Peer Reviews - Run throughout the programme. Not mandatory but highly recommended.

This section of the programme will require you to undertake a peer review with the LGA's peer review team. More details on this will be provided at the London September sessions by Matt Nicholls, the head of communications at the LGA.

Mentoring

As part of the programme you will be allocated a mentor from the Lgcomms Executive Committee. Details of your mentor will be made available to you within the next two weeks.

Additional sessions

We are keen to make sure you get the most you can from the programme so are happy to arrange additional sessions as we progress through the programme. Please think about areas that you’d like us to focus on and we can look to accommodate. It is also highly recommended that you attend one or more of the seminars provided through the Lgcomms annual programme.
