Take Two. The Referendum & Local Government Comms

On September 18th 2014 the Scottish Independence Referendum attracted the highest turnout in any election since 1910. And that means the highest turnout since universal suffrage. 84.6% of the electorate voted and 16 and 17 year olds voted for the first time. It was the biggest and most historic electoral event in a generation.

Now, with the Prime Minister having confirmed the date of the referendum on Europe as June 23rd, we’re going to have to do it all over again.

Setting standards that stick

Use them to empower the disempowered.

GDS launched the digital by default service standard and accompanying service manual in 2013. The objective was to make all government digital services so good that people would prefer to carry out the task online. Every new service launching on GOV.UK had to pass. As product manager, it was the most important 523 words I worked on in government.
